Winnipeg lost quite a bit in 2025. We lost the Jets’ playoff hopes. We lost that beloved diner on Main. We most certainly lost the concept of a gentle winter—because who doesn’t want to jump right from mosquito season to windshield frost? But we’d much rather remember 2025 by the excellent food gained, and this year, there was a lot of it. These are the best American restaurants in Winnipeg. Besides, we have poutine now.
Junction 59 Roadhouse
$$ | (204) 654-3345 | WEBSITE

Junction 59 Roadhouse’s Country Fried Chicken might be the greatest bite of comfort food we’ve eaten in Winnipeg. It’s a crispy, golden-fried chicken breast served with creamy mashed potatoes and country gravy. When the juxtaposition of crunchy coating vs. tender meat, savory chicken vs. rich gravy, and hearty portions vs. homey atmosphere combine, it’s a beautiful battle royale, only with more mashed potatoes.
Charlee’s Restaurant & Lounge
$ | (204) 663-6484 | WEBSITE

This lively Elmwood spot loaded with VLT machines, karaoke nights, buffet spreads, and standout burgers specializes in Canadian-Filipino fusion. But the game-changing dish is their exceptional Lumpia. It tastes like someone is launching perfectly crispy rolls at you with a deep-fryer pitching machine, which we promise is a good thing. And to temper all of that crunch, there’s savory filling, splashes of tangy dipping sauce, and a heavy hand of flavor.
Essentially, if you wanted to know what would happen if that New Year’s Eve celebration dumped Tocino Burgers instead of confetti, wonder no longer.
Hat Tricks Sports Bar and Grill
$$ | (204) 837-5831 | WEBSITE

Hat Tricks specializes in cold beers and wings, and we’re here today to love on the burger of the month. Each patty has a charred crust, juicy center, and melty cheese draped throughout. That’s only half of the equation. On the side is a generous basket of crispy, seasoned fries that resemble golden matchsticks, served with creamy garlic aioli. It’s so good that we dip our wings into it when the burger is gone. Just kidding. We ask for more.
Block & Blade Restaurant and Bar
$$ | (204) 256-7625 | WEBSITE

Block & Blade Restaurant and Bar is a lively spot in Winnipeg that serves up generous American fare, and yes, it is a palace of flavor. But our favorite new dish of the season doesn’t involve the main plates at all. It’s the berries and brie appetizer. This delightful portion of creamy magnificence somehow has as much sweetness from the fruit as it does richness from the cheese.
Alongside, there’s a chicken and brie sandwich, which adds an ideal savory note as the melted brie seeps through the bread.
Rudy’s Eat & Drink
$$ | (204) 421-9094 | WEBSITE

At Rudy’s Eat & Drink in Winnipeg, there’s a flaming caesar salad that arrives at your table with a dramatic whoosh. Fitting, since that dish is the restaurant’s signature, and the steak sandwich here is an absolute revelation. Between tender slices of perfectly cooked beef, caramelized onions, and a toasted ciabatta roll, this sandwich absolutely belongs in the steak sandwich hall of fame to begin with.
But the real genius here is the combination of the upscale yet comfortable ambiance and Kenzie’s team. That way, you get the best of both worlds—a lively atmosphere perfect for celebrations and excellent service to ensure it all feels welcoming.
Smitty’s Restaurant & Lounge – Winnipeg Meadowood
$$ | (204) 256-1242 | WEBSITE

These wings with their perfect crisp are this Winnipeg family spot’s greatest contribution to comfort food. They’re served with a classic Caesar salad and warm minestrone soup, but the side of ranch dressing might just be the best part. It cools the wings, provides creamy contrast for the salad, and serves as a dip for the crispy quesadilla wedges to scoop up.
Leopold’s Tavern Winnipeg – Osborne South
$$ | (855) 522-5367 | WEBSITE

2026 hasn’t just been a good year for restaurants—it’s been a good year for taverns, too. And Leopold’s Tavern on Osborne South, a lively spot in Winnipeg’s Osborne Village, is the best place to grab a bite and a drink. If we had to choose between all of the delicious menu items, we’d go with the buffalo poutine, piled with crispy fries, cheese curds, spicy buffalo sauce, and topped with green onions.
Savory, hearty, piping-hot, and just greasy enough, this indulgent dish is precisely what a lumberjack would order after a long day of chopping wood in the Manitoba wilderness. Next time you’re in the mood for standard nachos, reject that impulse and try the buffalo poutine instead.
Silver Heights Restaurant & The Heights Lounge
$$ | (204) 889-7246 | WEBSITE

Baked potato soup, baby back ribs, and prime rib bones don’t sound particularly groundbreaking to begin with. But serve them in a clean, comfortable dining room with fantastic service and you have a hit on your hands. The large portions of hot, delicious food add satisfaction, the gluten-free options ensure everyone can indulge, and a side of live jazz on Saturday afternoons cools down any lingering stress from the parking situation.
For a restaurant like Silver Heights that really succeeds in the neighborhood gem department, this is the spot you can’t miss.
Original Joe’s
$$ | (204) 897-7490 | WEBSITE

All of the classic dishes at this Winnipeg restaurant are worth the stop, from juicy burgers to the popular dynamite shrimp. Yet, what’s really stuck in our heads like the chorus of a catchy tune is Original Joe’s consistently hot and tasty food. It is what it promises—fresh ingredients prepared with care. But a blazing kitchen fuses the flavors and makes the whole meal taste like a satisfying comfort feast.
The burgers are juicy throughout, the shrimp pop with flavor, and the cheese becomes delicious molten goodness that’s safe to devour. The friendly servers keep drinks flowing, especially during happy hour specials, and though the lighting could be brighter, the overall experience leaves you full and happy.
Harvey’s
$ | (204) 772-9998 | WEBSITE

Yes, one of the best new twists of the year is flame-grilled burgers. When that open flame meets a basic beef patty at Harvey’s, it’s the char that steals the show. There’s just something about the smoky, almost electric grill marks kissed onto simple meat that elevates a plain hamburger like custom toppings elevate a fast-food meal. Oh, and a close second? Literally any donut on the menu.
Smitty’s Restaurant & Lounge – Winnipeg 580 Pembina
$$ | (204) 261-1005 | WEBSITE

This Pembina strip mall spot serves food that pairs well with a cold beer, be it loaded nachos with cheese and jalapeños, poutine, or late-night snacks. But don’t ignore the mozzarella sticks at Smitty’s. With their golden-brown exterior and gooey interior, they’re like edible treasures that we would hoard if not for the fact that we’d prefer to share them alongside a frosty pint instead. Plus, they’re too hot to handle right away, and ketchup has no place on proper cheese sticks.
Denny’s
$$ | (204) 788-2016 | WEBSITE

Denny’s blueberry pancakes are satisfying on their own. But paired with breakfast sausages, they’re even better. Between fluffy pancakes bursting with berries, crispy hash browns, sage-infused sausages, and perfectly cooked eggs, there’s plenty of flavor to wake things up while still letting the breakfast classics shine. It’s not only the best thing to order at this reliable chain restaurant, but it’s our favorite morning meal of the week.
Has a forkful of pancake slipped off the plate and onto the table? Yes. But it was worth it.
Red Lobster
$$ | (204) 783-9434 | WEBSITE

Red Lobster is a welcoming Winnipeg seafood spot that’s very clearly devoted to crustaceans. However, their finest dish is not a lobster-based item at all—it’s the garlic shrimp pasta. Each bite is a burst of flavor-rich shrimp made even tastier by sauce that’s equal parts garlicky, buttery, and savory.
