Oakland is known for its big bold flavors and trendy fusion spots, but some of its best are the ones you’ll find tucked away in unassuming storefronts. One of the prime examples is Fortune Restaurant, a popular Asian fusion spot with a lively neighborhood feel, that sits among the city’s diverse dining scene. The kitchen works with fresh ingredients to create dishes that get flavor from every part of the wok, so we usually focus on those, though there’s also plenty of rice and noodle options.

There are a lot of great Asian fusion spots in Oakland, but Lin Jia Asian Kitchen—which works just as well for a quick lunch as it does for a relaxed dinner—feels special. Located in a clean, modern space, the bright dining room and pleasant atmosphere make it a destination rather than just a take-out joint, but what really makes this place stand out is the fresh, flavorful Chinese menu.

Tucked away in Oakland’s culinary landscape, it’s hard not to develop a serious craving for Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant. Matsuyama operates as a ghost kitchen with quick service, making it perfect for a reliable takeout dinner, although lunch orders here are fantastic too.
The menu features fresh fish and creative rolls that aren’t overly sauced, like the Dragon Roll, Matsuyama Special, and Fantastic Roll. Simple nigiri and rolls are expertly prepared (the popcorn shrimp roll with its torched flavor was our favorite on a recent order) and worth trying alongside their tender sashimi.
