If you’re like us, you think of Oakland as that vibrant East Bay city you’d love to call home. It’s the perfect blend of urban energy and California cool. But Oakland also has incredible food. In fact, Oakland has some of our favorite chicken spots, and that’s not even considering Berkeley proper, which has its own guide.
KFC
$ | (510) 532-6000 | WEBSITE

KFC is a classic chicken chain. It’s known for its drive-thru and takeout, but this location offers a welcoming in-person dining experience. You’ll find things like crispy hot chicken, buttery biscuits, and mashed potatoes. This is a must-know spot for fried chicken lovers in the area, and perfect for a quick lunch.
Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken
$ | (510) 626-9880 | WEBSITE

Like its downtown Oakland location, this hidden gem serves great fried chicken—just with a lot more crunch. Their menu has tasty traditional sides, like creamy mac and cheese and tangy coleslaw, plus some less stellar options, like the slightly soggy fries. Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken’s space is clean and spacious, full of simple décor and has lots of room for groups. But as expected from a spot that loves crispy chicken every day, that’s when this restaurant gets busy.
So if you’re planning on getting their juicy, cooked-to-order chicken for a weekday lunch, definitely also plan on arriving a bit early for the limited parking.
Proposition Chicken
$ | (510) 808-5172 | WEBSITE

Proposition Chicken is a quick-service spot that we’d recommend to just about anyone. It’s compact (but not cramped), and the staff is always incredibly friendly and helpful, especially Carlos. Plus the chicken is excellent, with dishes like the flipped chicken sandwich and juicy rotisserie chicken. Make sure you get the tasty fried chicken sandwich to enjoy—at least one order every time you stop by for a meal.
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
$ | (510) 689-0120 | WEBSITE

There are countless fast-food chicken spots in Oakland, and Popeyes is a staple. But what truly sets it apart is that, alongside the classic fried chicken, biscuits, and sides, you can also get their shrimp special here. That means you can pair Louisiana-seasoned shrimp with a buttery biscuit, combining two delicious but typically separate cravings.
The dining area stays impressively clean, and the staff has really stepped up their game lately—attentive and professional, even when dealing with the occasional difficult customer. While the regular combos might run a bit higher, the $5.99 special is a solid deal, and the chicken itself is consistently hot, well-seasoned, and satisfyingly crunchy, often outshining other chains. Sure, the fries can sometimes arrive lukewarm, but for flavorful, affordable eats, Popeyes delivers.
Dave’s Hot Chicken
$ | (510) 423-9400 | WEBSITE

Dave’s Hot Chicken is part of the same group as the original location, and everything we said about that spot applies here, too. In fact, the only real difference is that it’s just a few blocks over. So, when the flagship is packed with families and you don’t want to wait for a table, just head a short drive east for the same fantastic chicken, crispy fries, and friendly service from staff like Arianna and Angel.
Church’s Texas Chicken
$ | (510) 568-5152 | WEBSITE

Church’s Texas Chicken is one reason we’re jealous if you live in Oakland. Not only does it serve very good fried chicken, but it also has a quick and easy drive-thru that’s perfect for grabbing a bite on busy days. If you’re dining in, though, you’ll get to see the freshly cooked 3-piece combos coming out hot. It’s this fresh cooking that’s responsible for the chicken, with its crispy coating and juicy meat. This place is a compelling reason to consider making it your regular spot.
JJ Fish & Chicken Oakland – Int’l
$ | (510) 633-1212 | WEBSITE

When a spot is “good for everyone,” that can signal “compromise.” But that’s not the case with JJ Fish & Chicken Oakland – Int’l, a fried chicken joint with a solid menu that pretty much guarantees everyone will find something they’ll love. This welcoming spot specializes in crispy and flavorful fried chicken (like the 5 Wings / 5 Legs combo, or the heavenly cakes), along with fried fish and soul food dishes.
Plus, the clean environment and ample parking let you enjoy a comforting meal without having to worry about the neighborhood.
JJ Fish and Chicken
$ | (510) 444-1870 | WEBSITE

“JJ Fish and Chicken,” a straightforward name for this counter-service spot with tasty lemon-powder-seasoned chicken. But you can’t visit the casual restaurant without ordering their banana pudding. It’s creamy, with soft vanilla wafer pieces layered in, and just enough sweet banana flavor, accompanied by a light whipped topping. Just know that parking in front is plentiful, so you can easily grab your food to enjoy at home or on the go.
