Most days, your after-work drink is a hastily mixed something from a sticky bottle, consumed while scrolling through endless reels. But happy hour deserves better than that. Whether celebrating a promotion or just surviving Tuesday, you deserve a proper cocktail—crafted with care, served with style, and sipped in a space that feels like a secret. Here’s to turning an ordinary evening into something extraordinary. Let’s explore Winnipeg’s finest.
Bonnie Day
$$ | (204) 786-8411 | WEBSITE

This cozy and warm restaurant in Winnipeg is serving the kind of dishes we usually expect from a charming, hard-to-find neighborhood spot: exceptional whipped feta and some of the best pizza in the city, including one paired perfectly with that feta. If you only have time for something quick, you should still pop in for the espresso crème caramel. It’s made with a custard that almost tastes like liquid velvet and is the greatest dessert we’ve found in Winnipeg.
Earls Kitchen + Bar
$$ | (204) 975-1845 | WEBSITE

Winnipeg has plenty of loud, forgettable spots that leave you wondering why you bothered. But this reliably great cocktail bar restaurant isn’t one of them. The California roll and margherita pizza are fantastic—and a great chaser to the quiet desperation of another Wednesday in January. But forget the week and take advantage of the half-price wine bottles with your friends in the solarium, who will probably expect you to keep ordering rounds.
The servers like Roxy and Mackenzie make the noise from the kitchen feel like background music to a properly memorable meal.
The Beer Can
$ | WEBSITE

The Beer Can is open year-round, but if you want the full experience, visit on a warm summer evening when the patio is buzzing. They have a straightforward menu and we recommend all of it. If you want to sample the local craft scene, check the chalkboard behind the bar to see the rotating taps from breweries like Low Life and Sookram’s. Otherwise, a burger with tater tots and a pint is the way to go. We really love the poutine variations, especially the classic cheese curd and gravy version.
Same with the tater tot snacks and pretty much everything we’ve ever enjoyed in this converted curling club space. There’s a reason those groups are gathered at the picnic tables overlooking the river.
Oval Room Brasserie
$$ | (204) 946-6514 | WEBSITE

If you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion without boarding a plane, then you might have to settle for a leisurely brunch at Oval Room Brasserie, which is the closest you’re coming to Paris this year. The beautiful (mostly) indoor restaurant has lots of delicious shareable pizzas and a divine Pisco Sour that’s appropriate to sip before noon.
Between the perfectly done beef tenderloin and the brasserie’s historic charm and decor, the only thing that’ll remind you you’re not dining in France is the notification on your phone that your train is departing soon from the nearby VIA Rail station.
Amsterdam Tea Room and Bar
$$ | (204) 946-1777 | WEBSITE

Amsterdam Tea Room and Bar feels like a cozy European hideaway, and an evening here should stretch as long as a leisurely Dutch canal cruise. For a night that feels like a mini escape, settle into a plush booth and order a round of tea-infused cocktails for the group. Start with the excellent beef tartare then move on to warm olives. Each is delicious and portioned to satisfy without overwhelming.
After finishing a refreshing corpse reviver, chat with the friendly staff, who are also having a Wednesday night worth remembering. Ask them for recommendations to keep the delightful experience flowing.
James Ave Pumphouse Food & Drink
$$ | (204) 560-5210 | WEBSITE

James Ave Pumphouse is such a lovely place to hide from your problems, dissociate, and stare at the pumping station. During dinner, the folks sitting at the bar are usually doing just that—with the help of a martini flight and some delicious beef braised tacos. This Winnipeg historical spot is an ideal evening drinking destination, and the food isn’t an afterthought either.
It’s perfect comfort food with a few curveballs like an exceptional ube cheesecake and a salmon bowl that’s consistently well-prepared and flavorful.
Gather Craft Kitchen & Bar
$$$ | (204) 927-7222 | WEBSITE

When Winnipeg’s bone-chilling winters and endless prairie skies start to wear us down, Gather Craft Kitchen & Bar reminds us why we brave this city’s extremes in the first place. This warmly sophisticated restaurant probably hasn’t needed to change its winning formula since it first opened, and that’s a great thing. It’s worth every penny and serves our favorite versions of modern classics like the braised beef ragu and lamb shank at prices that feel fair for such thoughtful flavors.
Come with a few friends, order more than your stomachs can handle (the carrots are a must-have, and save room for the bread pudding), and linger over expertly crafted cocktails like the ‘Not For The Faint of Heart Drink’ until the attentive, engaging servers gently hint it’s time to head home.
The Roost on Corydon
$$$ | (204) 414-9313 | WEBSITE

The Roost on Corydon is the closest we regular folks will ever come to having a personal mixologist craft our evening cocktails. The lounge, with its cozy seating and limited space, isn’t extravagant. But this Winnipeg cocktail bar has a creative menu that includes sparkly drinks, tasty mocktails, and vegan options in delightful concoctions you’d expect from a bartender working in a private speakeasy. Your chances of meeting that bartender are high.
He’s the one named Scottie making your drinks, bringing you healthy plates with changing seasonal ingredients, and compelling you to try Winnipeg’s best cocktails as creative as you can imagine (trust him).
Darling Bar

Darling Bar has a Bartender’s Choice cocktail that we actually enjoy more than the bar’s pricier signature drinks. You can order individual cocktails, but the $18 surprise option is a fitting evening treat. It won’t leave you overwhelmed, but it’s satisfying and a solid deal for the kind of meticulous craft cocktails you’ll encounter. Options change regularly, but you can get drinks like the impressive dill by dill, the paper plane, and we’ve never been disappointed by a Paralyzer 2.0 here.
They also have a tremendous tequila selection, with shots that somehow deliver on a smoothness that feels like a warm embrace.
Tabula Rasa
$$ | (204) 219-2276 | WEBSITE

If only we lived in Spain, where friends linger over tapas late into the night, sharing plates with animated conversation. When the craving for that kind of convivial evening hits, we head straight to Tabula Rasa. Their tapas-style service shines with some truly standout dishes: addictive fried lion’s mane mushrooms, a perfectly balanced tartare, and a steak that’s absolutely worth the trip.
You can order individual plates throughout, but the experience is actually a little better when you share, when the whole table gets to taste everything. Consider that your reason to clear your evening schedule and settle in.
Capital Grill & Bar
$$ | (204) 416-1144 | WEBSITE

Capital Grill & Bar for lunch is a lot like Capital Grill & Bar for dinner—just not as busy. You can do the $24 steak salad for lunch, which is the best way to eat at this downtown spot for under $30 per person. But there are also dishes exclusive to the midday menu, like a classic burger, fish and chips, and something called a chicken breast dinner, which consists of a perfectly cooked breast with splendid hot sauce (it was available when we went, and we were very satisfied).
The other perk of Capital’s lunch is easier seating. You can finish up work at noon and find an open table by 12:30.
Né de Loup
$$$ | (204) 487-1529 | WEBSITE

If you want really good food, but do not want to deal with the usual upscale restaurant fuss, then go to Né de Loup. This enoteca impresses with its diverse flavors and comfortable seating for groups. The attentive and friendly staff provide excellent service, offering detailed descriptions and spot-on recommendations. They sell dishes as sharing plates, but the best options are the standout dishes like the tartare, scallops, pappardelle, and cauliflower that range from $18 to $32.
Get a few—plus a cocktail—if you’re in the mood to spend a little too much money on amazing flavors for one. The atmosphere is welcoming, upscale yet relaxed, with beautiful attention to detail, making it an ideal spot for date nights and special occasions without any strict dress code or need for a reservation. With prompt service and a menu that delights, Né de Loup is a must-visit.
