Let’s be honest: Kansas City will forever be known to most as the home of barbecue. But to dismiss it as a place of only smoked meats would be doing yourself—and your appetite—a huge disservice. This vibrant city is home to incredible Italian dining everywhere you look. From family-run trattorias to modern osterias to beloved pizzerias, if you leave KC craving pasta, you only have yourself and burnt ends to blame.

When you’re tired of the same old chain restaurants, make your way to Jasper’s for a truly authentic Italian meal. The menu at this charming spot is filled with classic, comforting dishes like tender veal piccata with lemon-caper sauce, hearty cioppino brimming with seafood, and our personal favorite, the tableside fresh mozzarella and Caprese salad prepared right before your eyes.
The cozy Old World atmosphere with its warm lighting and rustic touches makes it an ideal place for a special occasion dinner or a relaxed evening out, even if the prices run a bit higher than your average trattoria.
Ragazza Food & Wine
$$ | (816) 960-4744 | WEBSITE

Tucked away in Kansas City’s dining scene, Ragazza Food & Wine is your go-to spot for hearty Italian classics and warm, family-style hospitality. The main dining area feels like a bustling trattoria with its lively chatter, rustic wooden tables, and the comforting aroma of simmering sauces. Here, you’ll find generous plates of pasta, perfectly grilled shrimp, and those famous meatballs that keep regulars coming back.
But what truly sets Ragazza apart is the vibe—it’s a place where the staff greets you with genuine smiles, the affordable wine flows freely, and the house-made limoncello caps off a meal like a sweet, boozy hug. Expect a crowd of locals sharing arancini, friends debating over Clam Linguine versus Carbonara, and everyone agreeing that the 6hr sauce pasta is worth every minute of the wait.
Cupini’s
$ | (816) 753-7662 | WEBSITE

If you’re craving authentic Italian in Kansas City, just follow the scent of garlic and fresh basil—it’ll lead you straight to Cupini’s counter-service trattoria. The pasta dishes at this local favorite can hold their own against any sit-down restaurant in the Midwest, only here you get to customize your own plate. Every sauce, from the famous Alfredo to the hearty meat ragù, clings perfectly to fresh pasta.
Between the bustling patio with its lively chatter, the glass cases showcasing daily specials, the friendly staff guiding you through options, and the unbeatable value of their lasagna, this isn’t just a great Italian spot in Kansas City—it’s one of the best casual dining experiences in Missouri.
Bacaro Primo
$$ | (816) 381-6084 | WEBSITE

Tucked away in Kansas City’s dining scene sits Bacaro Primo, a cozy Italian restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for date nights. The space feels like a charming European escape, with warm lighting and intimate seating that invites lingering. If you’re short on time (or appetite), prioritize the appetizers first. Along with the absolutely fantastic fresh bread, you’ll find standout dishes like the Olive Frittes and mussels with potatoes that regulars rave about.
When we’re hungry, we get the spicy Rosa pizza with its subtle hint of honey. When we’re really hungry, we go for the meatballs served over velvety ricotta—some of the best we’ve tasted. The attentive service and top-notch cocktails round out what feels like a special occasion every visit.
Johnny C’s Deli & Pasta
$ | (816) 483-3354 | WEBSITE

When you get tired of the usual fast food options, head down the road to a different kind of lunch spot: Johnny C’s Deli & Pasta. This unassuming little Italian deli dates back to the early 21st century when it was tucked among a business park off Front Street. These days, it’s a one-stop shop for hungry office workers, local families, and visitors who want something better than chain restaurants.
The menu means everyone in your group will find something they like, but if you want some guidance, head straight for the meatball sandwich or muffaletta, and don’t miss the Wednesday special lasagna that comes with salad and drink for around $15. The cozy space with its clean, adorable atmosphere and friendly service makes it a great spot to return to when you’re looking for a satisfying meal without the fuss.
Plate Restaurant – Brookside
$$ | (816) 775-0098 | WEBSITE

From the street, Plate Restaurant – Brookside appears as a charming neighborhood spot. Inside, you’ll discover a lively dining room buzzing with conversation. There’s a beautiful patio too, but if you’re hungry, head to the main dining area straight ahead. That’s where you’ll find magnificent pasta dishes (the carbonara is a must), plus Italian specialties like branzino, the seafood special with scallops, mussels, and shrimp, and our favorite, the filet mignon.
Head to the bar area afterward—it’s warmly lit with rustic accents—and enjoy your meal while sipping cocktails with extremely enthusiastic regulars.
Trezo Mare Restaurant & Lounge
$$ | (816) 505-3200 | WEBSITE

As underwhelming as the Italian restaurants are in Kansas City’s suburbs, the ones downtown might be even more disappointing—except for Trezo Mare. This inviting, popular spot has solid food—order the off-menu En Fuego and calamari steak sticks—excellent wine, and a patio large enough for any size group. Most importantly, it’s in a convenient location with friendly service, making it an ideal choice if you’re in the area for business or a social gathering and don’t want to travel far.
Wait times can stretch over 45 minutes even on weeknights, but if you’re with a smaller party, head straight to the lounge. It’s first-come, first-served.
The Wise Guy
$$ | WEBSITE

The Wise Guy is an Italian restaurant in Kansas City with a menu that at first glance looks similar to other Italian spots in the area. But skip the standard pasta dishes and appetizers (though they are tasty) and concentrate on the house specialties. Namely, the mozzarella sticks with prosciutto and Marsala fig dipping sauce, and the house-made chips that have become a show stealer.
You can order the salmon for those avoiding gluten, but we prefer the spaghetti and meatballs, with a sauce that’s perfectly balanced and not too sweet. As far as drinks, they offer a full bar, but if we’re here for dinner, we go with their absolutely perfect cocktails that pair well with the vibrant, classy atmosphere.
Dominic’s Casual Italian
$ | (816) 437-7200 | WEBSITE

This unassuming Italian spot—originally a family-run kitchen—opened in Kansas City years ago and, like a warm embrace of homemade cooking, changed the neighborhood’s casual dining scene for good. Between their fresh salads and hearty pasta dishes, there isn’t a single item we’ve tried here that’s been a disappointment—but if it’s your first time, the Italian salad, chicken and shrimp Spedini, and any type of calzone are a fine way to start.
They also craft satisfying meatball and Italian sausage plates with ingredients that taste straight from a family recipe that will easily last you a week’s worth of delicious leftovers.
Carmen’s Cafe
$$ | (816) 333-4048 | WEBSITE

Kansas City might not be the first place you think of for Italian food, but Carmen’s Cafe proves that wrong. This romantic spot with its mix of classic and slightly outdated decor has a unique charm that makes it perfect for date night. The menu features standout dishes like the highly-rated Shrimp Carmen and Shrimp Scampi, which regulars swear are the best tastes ever, along with Sebastian Veal.
If you only try one thing, make it the Shrimp Carmen—this rich, perfectly seasoned dish is the kind of indulgence that’ll satisfy you without making you feel too heavy before that evening show at the Kauffman Center. The staff goes the extra mile, and they even offer catering if you want to bring their amazing food to your next event.
Giovanni’s Italian Deli/Pasta
$ | (816) 459-9500 | WEBSITE

Giovanni’s Italian Deli/Pasta is an all-around excellent Italian spot filled with every type of pasta, sandwich, and salad you could want. But like skipping to your favorite track on a greatest hits album, we can’t ever go here without ordering their lasagna and hot pastrami sandwich. The lasagna is the best in the neighborhood (a high distinction in Kansas City), but it’s the pastrami that is worth a road trip just to eat.
The tender, moist meat—seasoned perfectly and topped with melted Swiss cheese—is rich, savory, and modeled after the same sandwiches the owner grew up eating in Italy. It’s an incredibly special meal that deserves a spot in everyone’s comfort food Rolodex.
SPIN! Pizza
$ | (816) 741-7746 | WEBSITE

For years, SPIN! Pizza has been a staple in Kansas City’s Italian dining scene, making it ideal for a family dinner or casual night out. The menu features creative pizzas and salads, with plenty of gluten-free options, but the Mini Mia pizza should be your first choice. This standout pie boasts soft dough with a perfectly crispy crust—a delicious creation that’s worth a visit whether you’re accommodating dietary restrictions or not.
Round out your meal with the Very Berry Salad, a blueberry butter cookie, and a scoop of their creamy peanut butter gelato.
Jovito’s Italian Café & Deli
$ | (816) 943-9988 | WEBSITE

Kansas City’s Italian dining scene has plenty of spots to choose from, and you could easily spend a month working your way through all the recommendations. But if you’re only going to hit one place, make it Jovito’s. This local café and deli specializes in classic Italian comfort food, from their unbelievable Grinder Meatball sandwich on amazing Italian bread to their must-try pasta salad. You can debate with your tablemates about which dish is the standout, but honestly, it doesn’t matter.
You take a bite of those flavorful meatballs with that rich sauce or that perfect tiramisu and you’ll want to order seconds. Make sure to grab one of their dense, chocolatey brownies for the road.
Zero Zero | Handmade Pasta
$$ | (816) 298-6090 | WEBSITE

You’ll find handmade pasta on just about every Italian restaurant menu in Kansas City, but if you want the best of the best, it’s at Zero Zero. The cozy shop has been winning over diners with their amazing agnolotti and ravioli that’ll make you realize how much mediocre pasta you’ve eaten over the years. Absolutely come to Zero Zero and get the truffle mushroom pappardelle a la carte, but we prefer ordering the rotating lunch special with focaccia, pasta, and dessert.
For $18, it’s one of our favorite lunches in town—the fresh, light focaccia and generous portions mean you’ll likely have leftovers for later.
Lidia’s
$$ | (816) 221-3722 | WEBSITE

Tucked away in Kansas City, Lidia’s is our go-to for a satisfying Italian meal without the wait. The cozy neighborhood spot offers a straightforward menu with standout daily specials, including their famous pasta trio that lets you sample the best of what’s fresh. If you’re pressed for time, go for the trio—we’re partial to the rich, house-made ravioli, but you can’t miss with any option, because the pasta itself is so good: tender and toothsome, with sauces that cling perfectly to each strand.
If you spot us leaving with a to-go box of that fresh pasta, don’t ask questions.
Sarpino’s Pizzeria Vivion
$ | (816) 452-3333 | WEBSITE

Kansas City might not be known for its late-night dining scene, but if you’re craving pizza after hours, Sarpino’s Pizzeria Vivion needs to be your go-to. This takeout-only spot in the Vivion area is the definition of reliable convenience. Pizzas arrive hot and perfectly boxed, the chicken supreme comes loaded with ricotta cheese, and customers appreciate the care taken with vegan options. The service is fast and efficient, but it’s still the incredible food you’ll remember the most.
The menu stays consistent, but our current favorite is the fantastic white pizza. Make sure to order ahead during peak hours.
Lazia
$$$ | (816) 897-8200 | WEBSITE

The quest for exceptional Italian dining in Kansas City is serious business, and several restaurants vie for the title of best in town. For that distinction, Lazia is the clear winner. Nestled in its charming space, the restaurant offers an unforgettable culinary experience, standout dishes like the incredibly tender pork shoulder and sweet-yet-spicy vodka pasta, and a crowd of diners celebrating special occasions or enjoying casual date nights.
It’s also open for those memorable evenings, which is essentially prime time in Kansas City.
Marco’s Pizza
$$ | (816) 708-2300 | WEBSITE

A pizza night in Kansas City might make you think of those generic chain spots where the delivery shows up cold after you’ve already given up. The experience Marco’s Pizza offers is, thankfully, a world away from those places. Come to this reliable pizza joint and you’ll find quick pickups from professionals, locals grabbing dinner on the go, and anyone else who was in the mood for a solid, well-made pie that day.
Marco’s menu covers the classics, with everything from cheese pizzas to meatball sandwiches, but we recommend focusing on the custom-topped pizzas, any of the cheesy bread sticks, and the large cheese pie.
Marco Polo’s
$ | (816) 941-6600 | WEBSITE

Between quick lunches downtown or family dinners after a long week, there’s a good chance that, if you’re in Kansas City, you’re craving something comforting. And that makes finding a reliable pizza spot important. Head to Marco Polo’s. This Italian restaurant offers a unique pizza experience that sets itself apart from the usual chains.
We say that because the menu centers around satisfying sandwiches like the Italian Hero with its combination of meats or the Grilled Sausage Sandwich loaded with onions, peppers, and potatoes. Also, it feels like a bonus, but this place maintains a clean and cozy atmosphere with fast, polite service. Do with that information as you will.
