Oakland’s finest Japanese dining isn’t confined to a single district—it’s woven throughout the city’s vibrant neighborhoods. For pristine sashimi and delicate tempura, head to Temescal. In Jack London Square, you’ll discover robust ramen bowls and sizzling teppanyaki perfect for post-work gatherings. Whether it’s melt-in-your-mouth toro, umami-rich miso black cod, or artful omakase you crave, these are the essential destinations.
Mijori Japanese Restaurant
$$ | (510) 465-8854 | WEBSITE

It’s pretty remarkable what Mijori is achieving with a space that feels more like a neighborhood living room than a restaurant. The Japanese spot in Oakland is serving the kind of sushi we typically anticipate from a high-end, reservation-only establishment: impeccably fresh nigiri, maki rolls like the celebrated double eagle, and agedashi tofu that we’re officially declaring a local treasure.
It’s a wonderful leisurely dinner, but if you only have time for something straightforward, you should still stop by for that bento box. It’s packed with options that almost taste like home cooking and is the most reliable Japanese-style bento we’ve found in the East Bay.
Shimizu Cuisine
$$ | (510) 653-7622 | WEBSITE

Oakland has plenty of sushi bars and ramen spots, but Shimizu Cuisine is unlike any of them. Most of the traditional Japanese dishes look something like this: a fresh piece of seafood is accentuated by a sauce or tamari that consists of several flavors you didn’t see coming. The highlights of the meal are usually some sort of riff on a roll that might be spicy, crispy, and sweet all at once.
We’ve only come close to experiencing food like this at the previous version of Shimizu, a neighborhood restaurant that set Oakland’s standard of sushi unrealistically high. The reasons to visit this version of Shimizu are mostly the same: because no one else makes food like this.
Oori Triangles – College Ave
$ | (510) 250-9833 | WEBSITE

This College Avenue spot makes seemingly bottomless triangles of great Japanese classics at highly reasonable prices. Even on a busy weekday lunch hour, the counter crowds with students and professionals eager to grab boxes of chicken teriyaki onigiri, spicy ahi tuna triangles, and bowls of edamame. Our favorite option is the 3-triangle set. Instead of smaller portions, they just serve you full triangles of different fillings with a side of edamame.
It’s all delicious and enough food for a satisfying meal. If the weather is cooperating, take your box to the nearby downtown Oakland neighborhood and continue your onigiri party with some urban scenery.
Geta
$$ | (510) 653-4643 | WEBSITE

This Oakland restaurant serves generous (and delicious) Japanese classics like the Geta don, spicy scallop roll, and amaebi nigiri—a special that’s only available when fresh. Thankfully, the Geta don with amazing tuna and a really great onsen egg is available every day. And we love it. It’s heavy on flavor and has a healthy dose of rice to soak up all that richness. The nigiri section of the menu should be a priority.
Specifically, the freshest hotate nigiri, which is intense enough to make your taste buds dance.
Uzen
$$ | (510) 654-7753 | WEBSITE

Uzen is a Rockridge Japanese classic. A meal here starts with warm towels and a small bowl of nutty homemade miso soup. The tempura appetizer is plated beautifully—the shrimp and vegetables are lightly battered and served on a bamboo mat with a drizzle of tangy tentsuyu sauce. However, the nigiri might be the best thing here: a generous slice of fresh fish over perfectly seasoned rice crowned with a dab of real wasabi.
Kakui Sushi
$$ | (510) 338-1188 | WEBSITE

Kakui Sushi is a delightful Oakland surprise. It looks like a clean, modern sushi spot, but the menu has a small but mighty selection of creative small plates. The options are usually the chef’s choice sashimi, the Warrior Roll, and bento boxes—and the sashimi and Warrior Roll are our favorites. While traditional nigiri and rolls are a tad limited here, you’ll also find excellent recommendations from the friendly and knowledgeable waiter Kenny.
This place is one of the only exceptional options in the area, and it’s a perfect date night or special occasion, or a refreshing option if Oakland has depleted your tolerance for mediocre, overpriced sushi.
Oori Triangles
$ | WEBSITE

Rice triangles are Oori Triangles’ specialty. Tasty options like spicy salmon and unagi are wrapped in most of the orders at this convenient Oakland Japanese spot (which focuses entirely on take-out service). The triangles—available individually or in combo plates—come with quick service and reasonable prices (we like the short rib and spicy chicken plates) and some ahi for variety.
While rice triangles are the main reason to come here, they also make good unagi if you want to have a satisfying meal on the go.
Koryo Sushi
$$ | (510) 594-0661 | WEBSITE

Japanese sushi is a thing of beauty. It may look simple, but the combination of fresh fish and perfectly seasoned rice can’t be beat. Koryo Sushi in Oakland does great versions while adding their own creative touches and a little California flair. This place offers standout dishes like tuna tataki and hamachi Kama. Stick to the classics here, like their very good sushi. This place makes the best spicy edamame in Oakland, and the hot tempura dishes that complete the meal are so good.
Sushi Bae
$$ | (510) 624-1550 | WEBSITE

The next time an unprompted craving for fresh fish and beautiful rolls pops into your head, go here. Sushi Bae is a cozy Japanese spot in Oakland that makes excellent chirashi bowls, gyoza, and creative sushi rolls. Since the place has a lowkey aesthetic with neutral tones, everyone gets to enjoy the cute decor with monstera plants and fluffy cloud lights while good R&B plays in the background.
Even though the staff prepares food quickly, they’re doing it with exceptional service that goes above and beyond. So when this place gets busy (it often does with its great value), be prepared to settle in and enjoy the super cozy atmosphere.
Ebiko
$ | (510) 903-6506 | WEBSITE

Ebiko is a Japanese grab-and-go spot, which means you can pick up a fresh omakase roll or California roll with avocado before grabbing some Japanese snacks. It ticks all the right sushi boxes with friendly service, a big selection of fresh fish, plenty of side dishes, and very good prices. The restaurant has consistent quality like the high-quality fish in the omakase roll and quick service every day.
But the best time to go is when you need a fast meal, when the grab-and-go sushi is priced around $12—and comes with fresh ingredients, good value, and helpful staff. And in case you forgot what kind of Japanese spot this is, it’s stocked in a spotless small space that looks like a convenient store.
The Bento House
$ | (510) 251-1300 | WEBSITE

While there aren’t many Japanese bento spots in downtown Oakland, The Bento House fills the void. This is perhaps the only place in all of Oakland where you can regularly get purple rice in your teriyaki bento box, the colorful staple that adds a unique touch to the meal. And The Bento House puts that rice to good use by making their own generous portions, including a really great bibimbap.
