We’ve devoted the past year exploring every taqueria and cantina across the metro, seeking out those perfect al pastor tacos and complex mole sauces. Our quest has only deepened our appreciation, and we now rank it among our essential culinary pillars—right alongside those legendary ribs.
La Piña Loka

Mexican food has never been a very fussy cuisine, unless you’re expecting white-tablecloth service and artisanal cocktails. But La Piña Loka’s choice of straightforward counter service instead of formal dining makes this spot the ultimate family-friendly option. This Kansas City restaurant serves some incredibly flavorful menudo that comes with a richer broth than the watery versions you’ll find at other Mexican places.
The depth is really concentrated in the tender tripe and hominy, which spares you the disappointment of bland soup. La Piña Loka’s menu also includes delicious quesabirria tacos that are wonderfully crispy but with a nice chew, and their horchata is another refreshing, cinnamon-spiced drink that goes great with just about everything too.
We like the contrast between the vibrant food and basic atmosphere, but also love these authentic dishes all on their own with the welcoming staff’s helpful guidance.
Margarita’s Southwest Boulevard

This Mexican restaurant on Southwest Boulevard serves some of the most satisfying comfort food in Kansas City. Their spice levels begin with the mild potato tacos before gradually building in flavor complexity.
Their medium cheese and beans option is a gentle “warm hug,” the spicier version is reportedly a “friendly nudge,” and their house specials are, well, “flavor-packed.” But beyond their food’s comforting warmth, Margarita’s prepares their dishes with authentic Southwest flair in a welcoming atmosphere that generously accommodates any dining preference you bring to the table.
This restaurant also has our favorite family-friendly setup in KC, which shines under the soft lighting as you settle into the relaxed rhythm of conversation and soul-satisfying food. The kids menu section is the highlight and includes vegetarian options with potato tacos, cheese and beans, and their signature dishes for additional variety and mild satisfaction.
Los Alamos Cocina

Barbacoa’s Queso Fundido con Rajas is topped with roasted poblano peppers, melted Oaxaca cheese, and a side of warm corn tortillas. Again, this place is a go-to for the tried and true, but keep in mind that the cocktails here are seriously impressive – one mezcal-based option even requires careful sipping.

El Maguey is a Kansas City Mexican spot that has become a new favorite for many customers around town. The food here has a fresh, well-prepared quality that really comes through on the first bite. Their chips and salsa are always served piping hot (both temperature and flavor-wise), so we recommend giving your salsa a moment to cool before digging in. It’s understandable if you can’t resist these house-made chips, but you might end up with some serious cravings when the savory flavors kick in.
We always go for the street tacos here, which are huge portions generously seasoned for a little extra pop. Pair it with some fresh margaritas to complement the bold flavors on your plate, or maybe even cool your palate if you can’t handle the heat.
Ponak’s Mexican Kitchen & Bar

Ponak’s Mexican Kitchen & Bar serves excellent Mexican food from inside Kansas City, ranging from their classic cheese and onion enchiladas to satisfying bean tostadas. Their delicious margaritas begin with fresh ingredients that are vibrant enough to make any evening feel festive. They then get paired with a big plate of food that’s generous enough to share, as well as a generous bowl of white cheese dip that’s perfect for their taco sauce style chips.
Some jalapeno salsa is tossed into the mix to turn up the heat before things take a turn for the memorably flavorful. Ponak’s also gets bonus points for ditching standard service for some quick, friendly attention that makes any wait worth it, which you can enjoy with family thanks to the kid-friendly atmosphere.
Abelardos’s Mexican fresh

Nachos usually come with a side of salsa, guacamole, and a protein like chicken or beef, but Abelardo’s in Kansas City decided to spare us the extra effort by throwing them all together into one loaded plate. The nachos here are not to be reckoned with, and consist of house-made chips piled high with cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, and your choice of protein. The chips come with that perfect crunch to balance out the creamy toppings.
The fresh guacamole also adds a great rich twist that pairs nicely with the hefty dish. But the nachos still wouldn’t be complete without Abelardo’s selection of salsas that cater to all spice levels. There’s no question that there’s a lot going on with this plate, but don’t assume the sour cream will save you if you go too hot. Yes, the creaminess helps curb the salsa’s heat, but think twice before going for the spiciest option.
Senorita Margarita

Mexican cuisine is a vibrant tradition that both locals and visitors to Kansas City hold near and dear to their hearts. And Senorita Margarita is an example of tiki atmosphere and authentic Mexican flavors fusing together to create something unique yet familiar, but still undeniably delicious. Their Al Pastor tacos feature perfectly seasoned pork that forms a caramelized crust on the griddle, while the meat remains tender and juicy underneath.
Their burritos consist of huge flour tortillas, flavorful fillings, and melted cheese that’s the perfect balance between hearty and satisfying. Senorita Margarita also serves delicious chips with queso on the side with lots of creamy cheese and Mexican dishes like street tacos or quesadillas prepared fresh upon order.
Margarita’s Martin City

At Margarita’s Martin City in Kansas City, the puffy tacos look less like typical Mexican fare and more like a generous serving of comfort food. Rather than receiving several layers of heavy seasoning, these tacos are filled with moist and tender roast pork that’s been slow-cooked to perfection. These tacos are a bit deceiving because they don’t appear particularly complex from their simple presentation. However, don’t be fooled because the pork packs a serious flavor punch.
Margarita’s puffy tacos have quickly become one of our dinner go-to’s with their substantial refried beans consisting of creamy texture and rich flavor to complement the tender pork, which is some of the best we’ve had in a long time.
