You probably don’t need us to tell you that Chesapeake’s dining scene has evolved dramatically in recent years. What was once a quiet coastal town known for its seafood shacks has blossomed into a culinary destination worthy of its own weekend pilgrimage—complete with reservations that book up faster than a Friday night bridge crossing.
Red Lobster
$$ | (757) 465-0627 | WEBSITE

A familiar favorite for decades, Red Lobster is one of those places where you can dig into all-you-can-eat shrimp, savor a perfectly cooked steak, and soak in that nostalgic atmosphere, all while enjoying reliable seafood. The offerings range from classic shrimp to steak, but that’s exactly why you return to a spot like this—comforting meals served with attentive care, a welcoming environment, and plenty of seafood.
When the service shines, like with staff such as Kendal, Jayden, Randy, or Sam, guests feel treated like royalty, with top-notch presentation and memorable dining. Sure, the inside might feel a bit outdated at times, and the food can sometimes be meh, but it remains a destination for those seeking a satisfying, no-fuss meal. Whether you’re a seafood enthusiast or just after something familiar, it’s a go-to for good service and a comforting experience.
Zeros

Always popular with locals, this sub shop is already a Chesapeake staple, thanks to its reliable Cedar Rd location. The fact that it offers weekly rotating deals makes it even more appealing for a neighborhood that appreciates a good value. The in-store experience, however, is still the place to load up on satisfying subs, whether Philly steak and cheese or meatball, plus burgers, hot dogs, wings, and salads. Those subs are also generous in portion if you’re looking for a hearty meal.
The crispy, crunchy fries with their soft interior and flavorful twist are the perfect accompaniment. With friendly staff maintaining the traditional taste, it’s an insane steal deal for the price that can’t be beat.

Mister Jim’s
$ | (757) 482-1333 | WEBSITE

A sub is an essential part of the Chesapeake experience. If you’re not eating a sub around here, you’re missing out completely. And Mister Jim’s is our go-to spot. They make everything fresh, from the Italian grinders to the personal pizzas. We can’t get enough of the Mr. Jim’s Special, packed with ham, salami, and melty provolone, as well as the very sloppy Joe. They also have fantastic fries and affordable, straightforward, classic favorites like the city hall burger and Philly spring rolls.
Rancho Grande
$ | (757) 361-0330 | WEBSITE

At this longtime favorite Mexican spot, dinner is served in a clean, welcoming dining room, and the friendly staff offers quick refills and warm smiles as you dig into the salsa with its delicious cilantro kick. In other words, it’s perfect for people who crave authentic flavors, but also appreciate a pleasant, family-friendly atmosphere.
You’ll find both the Texas quesadilla and the chicken taco salad with cheese, guacamole, and plenty of lettuce, and we’d recommend either the Texas Fajitas for two or the fried ice cream. Both come with the restaurant’s signature attentive service: consistently courteous and reasonably priced, with just a special little touch that creates happy memories.
New China

In other words, you don’t have to search hard to find it. They have friendly customer service, reasonable pricing, and the kind of food (think egg rolls, beef and broccoli with excellent sauce and veggies) you want to eat while you’re enjoying that unmatched flavor.
Portions are just right, making it the best Chinese food in the area for a satisfying meal.
AJ Gator’s Sports Bar & Grill
$ | (757) 482-0096 | WEBSITE

This lively sports bar is a local hangout and consistently puts out some of the best comfort food in the area. The menu is loaded with satisfying options, but there are also plenty of other classic bar bites to enjoy, like potato skins with homemade ranch and a half chicken quesadilla. The well-priced drinks, solid service, and plenty of large TVs to watch sports also keep us coming back.
La Hacienda Street Food & Tequila
$ | (757) 937-9023 | WEBSITE

Formerly known for its straightforward Mexican fare, La Hacienda Street Food & Tequila is a vibrant, welcoming spot seemingly made for folks who crave authentic street food without the travel. In the lively dining room, people spend evenings chatting over huge portions while nursing a margarita, or diving into a jumbo quesadilla that stretches across the plate. The tacos start flying out of the kitchen just after opening.
But the restaurant, which feels like an extension of Mexico’s bustling markets, offers more than just casual bites. A full menu melds traditional favorites with generous hospitality. Their ghordita piled high with toppings is a treat, and the $14 quesadilla loaded with fillings is worth every penny, especially if you’re planning on enjoying the mariachi band on the last Tuesday of the month.
Poketastic
$ | (757) 410-3089 | WEBSITE

There’s no better place in Chesapeake for poke lovers than Poketastic. The vibrant décor, the pocket-themed merchandise, the friendly staff—it’s a poke enthusiast’s paradise. But newcomers can appreciate it, too. Customizing your own bowl with the fresh-tasting fish and vegetables is certainly never a bad idea either. However, you don’t want to miss the must-try items.
Head straight for the poke nachos and Shrimptastic Poke Bowls where you can dig into delicious bowls, tasty creations, and other good stuff.
Longshots
$ | (757) 361-0160 | WEBSITE

If you want to grab a drink and some bites at Longshots, head to the larger section. Like, past the third set of doors. This welcoming establishment, located in Chesapeake, is first come, first served and offers one of the more relaxed experiences in the area. While the menu includes bar staples (French fries, calamari), they’re all a little better prepared than most of what you’ll find nearby. The calamari, for example, avoids being overly salty, which is appreciated.
If you can’t get a table right away, or want to wait, the place has two sections, and the front area through the second doors is a solid non-smoking, low-key spot to hang.
