In the heart of Texas, Giddings has quietly cultivated a dining scene that punches far above its weight—a delicious blend of cherished local institutions, bold newcomers, and barbecue traditions so legendary they could fuel a week of tall tales. Here are the spots we head to first when hunger calls in Giddings.
EYESCREAM
$ | (979) 716-5114 | WEBSITE

This frozen-treats-only spot in Giddings will cost you about $8 per item, which is a reasonable indulgence for just about anyone. But if you’re in the market for a sweet afternoon (or celebrating a sunny day), EyeScream is a delightful place to do it. For starters, the milkshakes are exceptional. Expect a variety of meticulously crafted options ranging from classic Italian ice to bubble waffle ice cream.
Run by a friendly owner, we appreciate that a cheerful visit to EyeScream feels less like you’re at a formal dessert parlor and more like hanging out with a neighbor who happens to have a charming food truck in their driveway.
Subway
$ | (979) 542-9601 | WEBSITE

Of the many sandwich chains in Giddings, this Subway sits at the peak of the quality-meets-convenience pyramid. For years, this local fixture has been serving excellent sandwiches at reasonable prices. Go for the club sandwich—essentially a sampler of the freshest bread, cheese, meat, and veggies in one package.
But if you know exactly which toppings you want (or which ones you don’t), you could also just step up to the counter and order all the custom subs your appetite demands, while watching the friendly and professional staff assemble fresh sandwiches with clockwork efficiency.
Elvira’s Cafe
$ | (979) 542-1111 | WEBSITE

Giddings has no shortage of chain diners vying for your morning dollars with predictable menus. Elvira’s Cafe is the most satisfying one of the bunch. This family-friendly spot first opened years ago as a humble breakfast counter off the highway. Now, they’re serving out of a simple, no-frills space that’s very Elvira’s Through and Through. The only real choice at breakfast is a generous American spread for about $12, designed to be paired with their standard coffee service.
We do miss the option to bring our own brew from home, but dishes at Elvira’s—like the Southwest Omelette packed with peppers, the classic two eggs with bacon and pancakes, and the two-egg plate with sausage patties—are just as hearty as anything you’d find at a fancier spot.
Chelis Mexican Food
$ | (979) 212-5064 | WEBSITE

Chelis Mexican Food is a vibrant Mexican spot in Giddings from the same folks who clearly take pride in their craft, and if for some reason you thought that this family-run place would be any less beloved, then you probably don’t understand Texas hospitality.
Between their homemade tortillas that arrive warm at your table, plates filled with standout beef fajitas, must-try queso, endless chips and salsa, and the strong chance you’ll leave feeling genuinely cared for by the super nice staff, a meal at Chelis is one of the most consistently authentic dining experiences you can have in Central Texas.
City Meat Market
$ | (979) 542-2740 | WEBSITE

If you’re looking for authentic Texas barbecue that won’t completely break the bank, try this historic butcher shop and barbeque spot in downtown Giddings. The brisket plate costs around $18, but they also offer a two-meat combo for $22 and a sausage sandwich for just $12. Expect the friendly owner to slice and pile pieces of brisket, chicken, and homemade smoked sausage onto the butcher paper in front of you with the care of a family tradition.
You’ll eat oak-fired meats, as well as classic sides like the potato salad, or vinegar-based beans, and plates topped with their unique hot sauce.
Los Caporales Mexican Restaurant
$ | (979) 500-3041 | WEBSITE

While Giddings might not be the first place you’d expect to find authentic Mexican cuisine, Los Caporales is a genuine standout in its own right. It’s tucked away in a cozy, unassuming storefront where you’ll devour generous quesadillas, perfectly grilled fajitas, and the most satisfying enchiladas al carbon we’ve ever tasted. Los Caporales is the perfect spot to bring the whole family, sip their signature margaritas, and enjoy a hearty meal over stuffed avocado appetizers.
Big Easy Saloon – Giddings
$ | (979) 212-8800 | WEBSITE

The Big Easy Saloon in Giddings offers some of our favorite bar experiences anywhere in Central Texas, and this local favorite follows through on its welcoming reputation. Despite the consistent praise from visitors near and far, the establishment manages to still feel like a vibrant neighborhood spot serving drinks and very good bar food. The excellent service from bartenders like Crystal and Nicole works as a friendly, attentive foundation for the Saloon’s delightful atmosphere.
Their best menu item is the “dragon balls,” with savory seasoning and satisfying texture that almost melt in your mouth. And if you’re looking for a great entertainment option, head into their game room and play some pool or darts while enjoying the bar’s convenient location.
Lost Pines BBQ
$ | (979) 542-2075 | WEBSITE

Lunch at Lost Pines BBQ feels like you hopped in the truck, drove down a country road, and are currently enjoying the Texas barbecue experience you’ve been craving. In reality, you’re just off the main highway in Giddings, but Lost Pines’ rustic dining room is designed like a classic Texas smokehouse, making it seem like you’re deep in the piney woods. As far as the food, expect generous portions of smoked meats that are perfect for sharing.
Be sure to get the brisket, BBQ sandwiches with that standout sauce, and the mac and cheese on the side.
Whataburger
$ | (979) 542-4968 | WEBSITE

Visits to Whataburger come with a side of overwhelming friendliness. The spacious dining room probably helps, and so does the drive-thru convenience. This welcoming burger joint in Giddings offers just two main options via counter service, so every booth is filled with people who planned minutes ahead to eat here. Stop by to see fries scooped into paper boats with a smile, steaming jalapeno biscuits wrapped in foil, and classic Whataburgers disappearing like magic.
Half of the staff will greet regulars by name and check on every table at least once during the meal. Follow their lead with a good mix of breakfast items, shakes, and classic options like perfectly cooked fries and burgers with all the fixings.
Reba’s
$ | (979) 542-4700 | WEBSITE

When it comes to Giddings dining, the options can be limited. But Reba’s has managed to take a spacious, clean dining area and turn it into a local favorite. Their specialty sandwiches are consistently satisfying, and their baked goods are fresh, flavorful, and the exact right level of sweetness. You can certainly order their salads or pizzas and be content, but our move is to stick with the sandwiches, which are generously portioned and come with friendly counter service and table delivery.
Taqueria Chihuahua
$ | (979) 542-3927 | WEBSITE

This Giddings gem has been serving up its famous tacos for years (practically a lifetime in this small town) and it still gets just as busy as it did when it first opened. For the most part, things at Taqueria Chihuahua haven’t changed much, with crowd favorites like the generously-sized tacos with homemade flour tortillas and breakfast items available all day. Does Taqueria Chihuahua have steeper competition today for great Mexican food than a decade ago? Absolutely.
But odds are you’ll still be at your table for a satisfying meal, enjoying delicious tacos and burritos packed with flavor while taking in one of the friendliest dining experiences in town.
Bullpen Bar & Grill
$ | (979) 366-2500 | WEBSITE

Finding Bullpen Bar & Grill, easily the most popular casual spot in Giddings, is a breeze. Not just locating the place, but settling into the scene. You’ll pull into a straightforward parking lot, swing open the door, and step into what feels like a lively community hall that happens to serve a $15 burger and a $5 beer to a bustling crowd every night. Each visit promises a mix of classic bar fare, cold drinks, and friendly chatter, all enjoyed amidst a warm, convivial atmosphere.
If enjoying a genuinely fun, no-fuss night out is on your agenda, consider the Bullpen a guaranteed good time.
Cardenas
$ | (979) 542-4410 | WEBSITE

It’s perfectly normal to think you’re getting the most authentic Mexican food in Giddings at Cardenas. You eat delicious dishes under a warm glow from simple pendant lights and enjoy Mexican cuisine that rivals the best of the Rio Grande Valley, like their excellent breakfast tacos and flavorful enchiladas served with comforting beans and rice. Cozy doesn’t translate to boring, though.
The friendly chatter of locals bounces off the clean walls, and the fast service comes with genuine smiles in every interaction. It’s all of the charm and comfort of a small-town cafe without compromising on the quality, so linger over your meal here for as long as your appetite permits.
Two amegos
$$ | (254) 826-4499 | WEBSITE

Two Amigos makes doing everything right look easy. The small interior of this Giddings spot is cozy and welcoming (ideal for family meals or casual gatherings), and the charming street where it’s located is the setting for a meal you’ll want to return to again and again. The menu doesn’t look too different from any other Mexican restaurant’s menu around town, but don’t let that fool you—it’s excellent. And that West Special is one of the best you’ll find in Texas.
We’d eat here every day if we could.
Suzy’s Sauce
$ | (979) 212-1770 | WEBSITE

Stepping into this Giddings Mexican spot is not unlike discovering a hidden culinary treasure. You’ll find a cozy seating area perfect for cooler evenings, a welcoming atmosphere where the staff take pride in their food, and an authentic dining experience that feels genuinely special. That said, Suzy’s Sauce is more than just warm hospitality—the tacos and salsas are outstanding, too.
We love the hearty combination tacos with bacon, and the classic egg, bean, and cheese tacos that essentially function as a masterclass in comfort food, filled with fresh limes, cilantro, onions, and their own delicious corn tortillas.
Santa Fe Steakhouse
$ | (979) 540-3330 | WEBSITE

In a perfect world, we’d eat at this Texas steakhouse once a week. And if you regularly find yourself in Giddings, please live out this dream for us. The beauty of this spacious restaurant is that you can relax, eat, and enjoy at your own pace. Starting at lunch, head to the salad bar for fresh greens with more crisp, vibrant options than a Texas wildflower field. During dinner hours, the menu expands with more steak dishes, pasta plates, and comfort foods you can enjoy in their massive backroom.
No main course costs more than $25, plus most of the portions are generous enough to share. Keep Giddings’ Santa Fe Steakhouse in mind for your family dinners, group gatherings, and other meals where good food and good company matter most.
Los Patrones Mexican grill
$ | (979) 542-0127 | WEBSITE

Tucked away in a bustling Texas town, the menu at this Mexican grill is packed with favorites like pollo marisco, enchiladas, and fried avocado with shrimp. You’ve probably tried these dishes elsewhere, but Los Patrones prepares them with such generous portions and vibrant flavors that they feel completely new.
If you’re looking for a solid introduction, order the homemade tamales with flavorful red rice and some crispy French fries (plus their famous sweet tea) and settle into the family-friendly dining room. For a more elaborate dinner, we’d recommend their chicken plate with mushrooms and sauce or the out-of-this-world Cajun pasta, but for a reliably quick and satisfying meal, this Giddings location is spot-on.
