Whatever brings you south of the city, San Mateo’s dining scene is your reward. Grab your appetite and your sense of adventure—here are the spots worth your 2026 calories.
Falafel Tazah San Carlos
$ | (650) 453-3979 | WEBSITE

Falafel Tazah San Carlos hasn’t really changed much since it opened, and that’s about all you need to know. This San Carlos spot has more than earned its place in local Middle Eastern food lore, and while the Vegetarian Combo isn’t our absolute favorite among the casual grill options, it’s still pretty decent. Come pay your quick lunch respects and get a delicious Lamb and Beef Shawarma Rice Plate on your way out. Open for takeout with limited clean seating.
Zhangliang Malatang
$$ | (650) 781-3336 | WEBSITE

Greetings from our favorite San Mateo customizable noodle spot. Admittedly, Zhangliang’s food is just fine while you’re craving something quick, but when you’re really in the mood for Malatang, it reaches levels of spectacular. Classic bone broth? Vegetarian dry ramen? Fresh tofu and salad bar? Yes, to all. The atmosphere is clean and well-decorated, not in the sterile chain restaurant type of way that makes you feel rushed.
Zhangliang’s your friend who always has your back—with fast orders that come out piping hot for lunch or dinner. Underrated lunch idea: grab a large bowl, fill it with fresh ingredients at the counter, and enjoy a healthy meal at a reasonable price afterward.
Zen Noodle Bar
$ | (650) 781-3183 | WEBSITE

Zen Noodle Bar is a Shanghainese noodle spot in San Mateo where the clean lines feel comforting in all the right ways. People who live nearby seem to appreciate its steady, family-run presence, and every other customer who walks in greets the staff like an old friend. Any meal at Zen Noodle Bar should be unhurried, communal, and tea-fueled.
The magic happens in the open kitchen, where diners in casual weekend wear savor pan-fried soup dumplings, vegetarian dan-dan noodles, and bowls of pork belly over rice. Early evening (they’re popular for dinner), you’ll find a lot of regulars and families chatting easily over the gentle clatter of pans. And it somehow feels just like home.
BEACH HUT DELI
$ | (650) 581-1166 | WEBSITE

BEACH HUT DELI is one of those places that makes serving up delicious sandwiches look effortless. The casual interior of this San Mateo spot is bright and beachy (ideal for a quick lunch break or grabbing something to go), and the whole vibe is welcoming you’ll want to come back for. The menu doesn’t look too different from any other deli counter around town, but don’t let that fool you—it’s excellent. And that Santa Cruz sandwich is one of the best you’ll find in the area.
The staff is super helpful and easy to work with for catering orders.
B Street & Vine
$$ | (650) 347-8463 | WEBSITE

If you haven’t at least secretly craved a perfect panini and some live jazz after a long day of work, you’re lying to yourself and us. B Street & Vine has been around for years and is a flat-out San Mateo institution. They make their Cream of Artichoke soup with the same care as they craft their fresh salads, and yes, it’s soul-warming. Maybe you were already smiling because you found easy parking right out front, but this will be a grin of pure contentment.
Their outdoor patio is open for lunch, happy hour, or an enjoyable evening any day of the week.
The Backhouse
$$$ | (650) 260-3961 | WEBSITE

This ghost kitchen concept can be the first stop of a special occasion or the last. It offers pickup until late and serves fresh, beautifully presented, sushi-friendly boxes until closing. Think salmon trio boxes, bluefin tuna boxes, and omakase boxes that are generous enough to get everyone at the table smiling like they’re celebrating something wonderful.
El Sinaloense Mexican Restaurant
$$ | (650) 345-1180 | WEBSITE

El Sinaloense is a hidden gem these days, and sometimes there’s a bit of a wait, but the mother of San Mateo Mexican spots is still worth a midday visit. The interior of the location is designed to look like a Sinaloan seaside cantina, which sometimes envelops us like a coastal breeze. You’ll lose all sense of the outside world at this restaurant, regardless of how hungry you are.
But what really matters are El Sinaloense’s fresh-ingredient infused seafood tower, flavorful tomato dishes, and super sweet local atmosphere. Open for breakfast and lunch.
人间烟火小酒馆(Dynasty BBQ)
$$ | (650) 393-4819 | WEBSITE

There’s something special about stepping into Dynasty BBQ on a bustling Friday evening. The traditional, all-wood interior is comfortably full, the aroma from the central grill permeates every corner, and everyone shares skewers like they’re the last batch on the grill. In essence, it’s a cozy gathering spot. The generous menu features perfectly grilled skewers, slow-smoked brisket with homemade BBQ sauce, and other excellent barbecue dishes, and everything is designed to be shared among friends.
The tender lamb and lamb chop skewers are particularly flavorful, while the Korean cold noodles and cucumbers provide a refreshing contrast. The mini heated grill with tea lights adds a playful touch to the experience. Though the seasoning has a consistent flavor profile that some might find the pepper notes a bit pronounced, the friendly service, clean environment, and reasonable prices make it a recommended spot for casual dining.
Bawarchi Express

Bawarchi Express isn’t going to win any Michelin stars, but that doesn’t stop the takeout orders from piling up at this authentic Indian cloud kitchen in San Mateo. If it’s your first time, get the Vijayawada chicken biryani with a side of naan. If it’s your 20th time, get the exact same thing, and then go enjoy it at home like everyone else. Expect pretty consistent quality and spicy flavors that keep customers coming back.
Furagu Sushi
$$ | (650) 931-4038 | WEBSITE

When you want sushi that feels like a genuine treat without breaking the bank, the answer is always Furagu Sushi. Sure, there are other sushi spots in San Mateo, but the fish here doesn’t sacrifice freshness for value. Sit in the cozy dining room under the warm glow of pendant lights, and order the Awesome Furagu roll, a spicy tuna hand roll, and a generous portion of vegetable tempura right around opening time at 4 pm.
We also are firm believers that the friendly, attentive service and accommodating approach to allergies make any visit here feel like a welcome escape from the ordinary.
Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant
$$ | (415) 990-5938 | WEBSITE

A San Mateo staple, Superstar isn’t the most polished dim sum spot in the Bay Area, but it’s certainly the most reliable. The lunchtime crowd is a lively mix of families celebrating birthdays and office workers sneaking in a quick bite. As for the food, skip the Americanized options and stick to the classics, whether it’s the steamed pork dumplings, walnut shrimp, or preserved egg and pork congee.
The Vegetables with Beef is a satisfying stir-fry, but if you’re really looking to indulge, order the Spicy Salted Pork Spareribs with their crispy edges. Just be prepared to flag down servers for water refills and extra napkins—the service moves at its own leisurely pace. Open for lunch and Hong Kong-style dinner.
Pancho Villa Taqueria
$ | (650) 343-4123 | WEBSITE

We have no idea why it goes seemingly unnoticed that Pancho Villa Taqueria serves massive portions. Open with a large space that makes it a popular spot, Pancho Villa is where you go to settle into a casual booth, eat some carne asada burrito, drink a fresh juice, and wait for the best chile verde dinner plate to arrive. This isn’t your grab-and-go taco stand. Come here after a long day or a lively gathering with friends, and you’ll be in generous Mexican food bliss.
Ramen Dojo
$ | (650) 401-6568 | WEBSITE

The cozy spot has a single location in San Mateo, where the lights stay warm and inviting during all operating hours. But whether you come at noon or during the dinner rush, you’ll see families and ramen enthusiasts gathered around steaming bowls of rich broth. Order it with your choice of spiciness level, and they’ll customize it right at your table until it’s perfectly suited to your taste.
Beyond this incredible ramen base, the variety of toppings is also worth your time—including some great options for kids. The friendly staff keeps things moving smoothly even when it’s busy, though some long-time regulars note the menu has evolved to include less traditional Japanese items over the years. Still, at around $15–$18 per bowl, it remains a great spot for ramen lovers of all ages who appreciate that flavorful broth and energetic service.
Sharetea San Mateo
$ | (650) 581-1951 | WEBSITE

Open since 2022, Sharetea San Mateo is a downtown classic that serves quality bubble tea and mango drinks throughout the Peninsula. But at their welcoming location in San Mateo, they serve those drinks with quick service and friendly staff.
Given its atmosphere, it’s not the loudest spot to hit after a busy day of shopping, but if you’re looking for a quiet place to work on weekdays or need to grab a boba before the movies next door, the mango drink with ice cream on top is exactly what your sweet tooth needs.
