San Mateo’s seafood scene is a minefield of overpriced mediocrity and frozen imports masquerading as fresh catch. That’s why we’ve spent months shucking, slurping, and scientifically evaluating every oyster bar and fish house along the Peninsula. Skip the tourist traps—here are the only spots where the seafood is actually worth the coastal premium.
California Fish Grill
$ | (650) 753-2521 | WEBSITE

This automated seafood spot in San Mateo is determined to take us to the future where ordering is done through screens and food appears with impressive speed. And it succeeds. The self-service kiosks and prompt delivery system provide a perfect backdrop for eating things like the fish and chips, and rather straightforward options like the Ahi Poke Bowl (yes, seriously).
This is a perspective-giving cafeteria experience that will make you grateful that we live in the age of quality seafood at reasonable prices and attentive staff who bring water without being asked.
Jeffrey’s Hamburgers
$ | (650) 348-8698 | WEBSITE

During the summer, this San Mateo staple goes all out with their classic diner atmosphere. Red vinyl booths line the walls, chrome accents catch the light, and there are enough vintage signs and memorabilia to rival that neighbor’s retro garage collection. But the milkshake machine is what really completes this burger joint’s whole nostalgic scene. It hums proudly behind the counter, surrounded by stacks of French rolls and fresh ingredients.
The stools at the counter next to this creamy centerpiece are the best seats in the house, especially while enjoying a juicy burger and a frosty chocolate shake.
El Palenque Taqueria
$ | (650) 342-4040 | WEBSITE

While most of the Mexican spots in San Mateo are primarily great for sitting down and/or looking fancy, the food at El Palenque Taqueria makes it a serious utility player. This place has a humble setup with simple decor that’s functional, surrounded by limited seating, and designed for grabbing takeout. Do you want to dine in here for a special occasion? Probably not. But we’re not going to try and stop you.
Central Park Bistro
$$$ | (650) 558-8401 | WEBSITE

This polished seafood bistro makes you feel like you just stepped into a fine dining establishment without any of the usual fuss. With soft lighting, contemporary jazz, and comfortable leather banquettes, Central Park Bistro already scores high on the relaxation scale. But tying everything together is an open kitchen in the center of the dining room. It makes the counter seating directly in front of it the most ideal spot in the restaurant to enjoy halibut with a glass of wine.
Porterhouse
$$$ | (650) 579-5911 | WEBSITE

The first thing you notice when you step into Porterhouse is the lively bar area dominating the entrance. And while it doesn’t have the same intimate feel as some of the other spots on this list, it’s still spacious enough to be inviting. It also has a very polished-looking marble countertop, so there’s no risk of spilling your cocktail while celebrating. Plus, there are plenty of comfortable stools and high-tops nearby.
On second thought, we’re not even sure it’s technically just a bar—it feels more like a destination. But it’s the atmosphere that counts.
Clay Oven Cuisine of India
$ | (650) 342-9194 | WEBSITE

Dining at Clay Oven Cuisine of India in San Mateo feels a little like being in a cozy Indian home kitchen, complete with a clay oven. And the one here is very authentic—it’s traditional with actual flames and centrally visible so every table can appreciate it. The one drawback is that because it’s real, it gets very warm if you’re sitting close by. Another drawback: it’s not really a home kitchen, and you’re not actually in India.
El Sinaloense Mexican Restaurant
$$ | (650) 345-1180 | WEBSITE

El Sinaloense is the perfect coastal Mexican spot: it’s vibrant without being overwhelming, has fantastic seafood dishes, and is home to a new and very impressive Seafood Tower you have to order. There are even free, freshly made chips and salsa when you sit down. Basically, this place will turn you into a satisfied local regular, but with exceptional flavor. Just try not to fill up too much before the main course.
Pacific Catch
$$ | (650) 389-2482 | WEBSITE

The upscale ambiance at Pacific Catch reminds us of the kind you find in a nice waterfront restaurant. The type you’d celebrate a promotion over (if your boss would ever commit to that ‘raise’). This seafood spot has plenty of Latin bowls available, and the generous pours make it great for enjoying Happy Hour with friends next to the bar. Which is useful, since you can’t get that work project off the ground, either.
Lobster Chef
$ | (650) 315-2218 | WEBSITE

At this San Mateo seafood spot it’s common to find people just hanging out at lunchtime digging into garlic noodles, or friends sitting at a table sharing a seafood boil and the all-you-can-eat buffet over cold drinks. But the best seats at Lobster Chef are in the front window right by the cute decorations. Situated by the friendly owner’s station, the clean tables are a great place to relax and start your attempt at finishing that massive $45 buffet plate.
Taqueria Los Primos #2
$ | (650) 548-9713 | WEBSITE

This straightforward taqueria already has plenty going for it—ample seating that never feels crowded, food that arrives quickly and hot, and a general sense of efficiency that makes this a reliable spot for a satisfying meal. But it’s their super burrito that really ties everything together.
It may not be the fanciest, or the most elaborately presented, but when you factor in the generous portions and fair prices, nothing beats digging into that carnitas super burrito with a side of fresh, flavorful salsas and a glass of their great horchata.
Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant
$$ | (415) 990-5938 | WEBSITE

Unlike some of the other spots on this list, Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood feels less like a cramped Chinatown hole-in-the-wall and more like a bustling, sun-drenched banquet hall in the heart of downtown San Mateo. It’s spacious, bright, and authentic, courtesy of large round tables and a steady stream of steaming carts. Every dish is accounted for, from the savory preserved egg and pork congee to the crispy walnut shrimp.
Plus, since the restaurant can cater to different sized groups, it’s perfect if you and up to a dozen friends want to feast on well-priced (and satisfying) dim sum with a little more elbow room than a typical lunch spot.
Guadalajara Grill
$ | (650) 573-6933 | WEBSITE

Guadalajara Grill makes excellent Mexican food—each massive portion has authentic flavors, zesty salsa, and dishes like carne asada or chile rellenos. And by grabbing a seat next to the salsa bar in the middle of their dining room, you and your chips can stay satisfied.
