Tasty Thai
$ | (816) 584-8801 | WEBSITE

When some people think of classic Thai restaurants, they picture ornate decorations and traditional music. Or they think of overly spicy food that numbs your tongue. Tasty Thai is neither. It’s a Thai and Vietnamese spot in Kansas City that’s straightforward and reliable but will also satisfy Sarah, your picky friend who backpacked through Southeast Asia and won’t stop talking about authentic street food. They do indeed serve some of the best curry and pho in town.
But their mango sticky rice—sweet mango over perfectly cooked sticky rice—is what made us fall in love with this place.
Waldo Thai
$$ | (816) 605-1188 | WEBSITE

Maybe your days of chasing the latest food trends are behind you. But if you still want to experience authentic Thai flavors—all while feeling like you’ve discovered something truly special—then make your way to Waldo Thai. If you’re coming here for a memorable meal (or just want dinner to feel like a culinary adventure in and of itself) get the Muni and Buck Tui.
These dishes arrive with vibrant, aromatic steam rising from the plate, showcasing layers of bold spices and fresh ingredients, then deliver the absolute most satisfying Thai food you’ll taste in Kansas City. Their constantly changing menu is also one of the city’s best.
Old Wok Barry Rd
$ | (816) 832-8622 | WEBSITE

Old Wok Barry Rd is affordable, but also a guaranteed satisfying meal (if you’re into classic Thai comfort food). Expect great service and very flavorful dishes involving lots of fresh herbs. They have some excellent combo options that won’t disappoint, but if you’re ordering individually, make sure to get some form of pad thai and the Thai iced tea, which comes with just the right amount of sweetness.
The menu does offer both Chinese and sushi selections, so if you don’t see those two Thai classics—don’t panic. Whatever you have here is going to be some of the most delicious food you’ve eaten all week.
Thai Spice
$ | (816) 737-1881 | WEBSITE

In a city full of casual Thai spots, Thai Spice has personality. It’s simple, chill, and a friendly server might appear out of thin air to start chatting about spice levels on a busy night. While Thai Spice’s love of fresh ingredients has only intensified over the years, it has stayed true to the authentic Thai flavors that gave it a loyal following, today, the Kansas City restaurant calls its food consistently amazing every time.
Thai House Restaurant
$ | (816) 943-1388 | WEBSITE

Your best bet at Thai House Restaurant is ordering the curry fried rice for $18. The meal centers around Thai specialties from their extensive menu, and typically begins with the chicken spring rolls and finishes with the basil fried rice and gaprow—it’s not a dining experience that’ll leave you wanting more.
Lulu’s Thai Noodle Shop
$ | (816) 474-8424 | WEBSITE

Lulu’s Thai Noodle Shop is part of Kansas City’s Thai dining scene, but what sets it apart is the experience. Lulu’s serves Thai classics, many of which showcase their strength: fresh, vibrant ingredients. They’re featured in nearly every dish, some of which hit the mark more consistently than others. But menu highlights like the Drunken Noodles and Thai Cashew Chicken have never disappointed us. Come here with the family, because the atmosphere is casual and kid-friendly.
Or come for a relaxed meal, especially if you’re a fan of natural lighting and clean spaces.
Cozy Thai Restaurant
$ | (816) 943-0999 | WEBSITE

Lunch at Cozy Thai Restaurant blends authentic cuisine with everyday dining. This restaurant serves traditional Thai food in a space designed to feel welcoming, all within a neighborhood restaurant atmosphere. While they aim for a genuine Thai dining theme, Cozy Thai fits well into Kansas City’s reliable lunch and takeout scene. Quick service during the meal adds efficiency to dining. The space features an inviting ambience and creates a visually pleasant environment.
Baramee Thai Bistro
$ | (816) 442-7070 | WEBSITE

Baramee Thai Bistro makes sense for Kansas City. The Thai restaurant, which comes highly recommended, specializes in classic dishes you can share family-style (unless you’re sitting on the beautiful patio, in which case you might just keep them to yourself). The curries and stir-fries range from $16 to $24, a bargain considering you can easily spend upwards of $40 if you order multiple appetizers like crab Rangoon and Thai wings.
And the dining room is covered in warm lighting that looks like it came from lanterns used to make the atmosphere inviting.
Phikul Thai Bistro
$ | (816) 894-3993 | WEBSITE

We tend to be as suspicious of River Market restaurants as we are of an unknown number that wants to talk to us about the money we’re owed by the IRS. But dinner here is as delightful as finding out the IRS does, in fact, owe you $5,000. The cozy Thai bistro has some lovely indoor seating and a nicely decorated dining room that’s pretty enough for a date but casual enough for an easy Wednesday dinner.
The best part about Phikul Thai Bistro, though, is the big list of very good Thai dishes: basil fried rice as flavorful as fresh herbs, great green curry with chicken, seafood fried rice, and lots more.
Thai Orchid – Northland
$$ | (816) 393-0099 | WEBSITE

Since Kansas City always moves to its own barbecue rhythm, it’s fitting that one of the city’s best Thai spots also feels distinctly Kansas City. The Thai Pumpkin Curry is a perfect blend of sweet and savory. The calamari appetizer uses fresh squid, the crying tiger garlic fried rice has a Midwestern heartiness, and so many of the standout dishes showcase the restaurant’s impressive spicy range.
This is Thai food done Kansas City style—and done in a way that makes a delicious case that curries, fried rice, and apple fried wontons are just as Kansas City as burnt ends, Boulevard beer, and arriving right on time for dinner.
