But what makes The Pressed Penny Tavern stand out is its welcoming family atmosphere—we’d feel just as comfortable stopping by for a quick solo smash burger on a quiet Sunday as we do making plans with old friends we’ve known for years. The lights are warm, the food is delicious, and the service stays friendly.
And if the conversation reaches a lull, you can play “spot the pressed penny” in the unique decor as the soccer match plays on the TV.
The Capital Grille

While Kansas City has several notable steakhouses, The Capital Grille stands out as a destination we’d gladly plan a special evening around, though reservations are typically easy to secure. This upscale spot maintains an inviting atmosphere, even on busy nights. The first order of business is the 22oz. bone-in ribeye and the shrimp cocktail with five XXL shrimp, beautifully presented.
Kansas City’s lucky to have The Capital Grille—it’s hard to find a dining experience this polished without having to navigate strict dress code concerns.

The shrimp tacos are as flavorful as anything you’d expect from any decent wine bar, while the meatballs are nearly twice the size and dominate the entire plate.
Always get the chips (that are more seasoning and crunch than potato) as your starter. Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome—there will most likely be a wait, but you can spend it sipping on a glass of wine or two in their lounge with the fire on the deck.

Seasons 52 is the city’s special occasion dining destination. The dishes coming out of this consistently busy kitchen hit the ideal balance between flavor, presentation, and portion size. Classic menu choices, like perfectly cooked steak and delicious oven baked gnocchi, along with other seasonal standouts including the Key Lime pie and the berries and bourbon drink, are all fantastic.
While you wait for your carefully prepared meal to be plated and served, you can enjoy the warm ambiance that’s enhanced by attentive staff and a welcoming atmosphere.

Anyone who likes to spend their evenings admiring whiskey bottles with pretty labels should come here to brush elbows at the long tables and split a few pretzels with friends. This laid-back spot (with a well-stocked patio) is the neighborhood’s buzzy beer and whiskey destination. The menu is mostly rotating craft beers with some rare finds, but focus on the popular pretzels that get nice and warm from the oven.
Hone in on the rotating taps, a selection-covered stunner poured by, no surprise, knowledgeable staff.
Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen

When you want a cozy European wine bar experience with prix fixe meals and thoughtful pairings—or when you just want a leisurely meal with huge portions and friendly service—get to Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen. This place checks all the inviting charm boxes, down to the fresh towels on rainy days and the constantly rotating menu that keeps things exciting. You’re obviously here for the excellent wine selection, but the dishes are consistently satisfying.
Stick with the beautifully crisp-skinned Roast Amish Chicken or the Steak Tartare and you’ll leave happy, and always round things out with the Pommes Frites served with that excellent aioli.
Affäre

Affäre runs a tight fine-dining operation and we’re eternally grateful for it. The food is incredible, hard stop. A four-course meal comes with impeccable service for around $125 per person (the standout black forest cake alone is worth the splurge). There are a ton of dishes to choose from, but our favorites are the white asparagus, seared foie gras, and the duck breast. Notably, this is one of the few places to find wild boar on the menu.
Heads up, parking can be challenging, but the dimly lit, classy interior makes each table feel like a private dining experience.
Green Dirt on Oak

Green Dirt on Oak is one of the standout wine bar restaurants in Kansas City. While some entrees might not appeal to everyone, the ambience, drink selection, and cheese boards consistently impress, making it a favorite spot for dinner, drinks, or a treat from the first-floor café.

If you’ve ever dreamed of finding a neighborhood spot where the servers remember your favorite appetizer, your go-to salad order, and exactly how you like your fish cooked, Charleston’s Restaurant is your new home base. The cozy KCMO establishment with its inviting outdoor patio serves the kind of comforting, flavor-packed dishes you’ll crave after a long day, like the perfectly crispy Fish and Chips with amazing tartar sauce and the highly recommended Chicken Fried Chicken.
It’s first-come-first-served here, but that won’t prevent you from making it your regular lunch destination or your pre-dinner drinks spot before a night out in the city. You’ll be recognized as a regular before you know it.
Plate Restaurant – Brookside
